ARMENIA - THE ANCESTRAL HOME OF HOMELANDS Is there a country in the world whose name moves us more than the name Armenia? Thinking humanity should always cherish a feeling of involuntary respect for ancient Asia. The glorious, beautiful image of Masis, our historical Mount Ararat, inscribed in the tradition, should always rise before our souls. The ancient belief in miracles has certainly faded, and on its sparkling white summit, no one is anymore searching for the blackened wreckage of the ark in which our ancestor supposedly found refuge. Symbols are now useless, because the knowledge of naturalists, ethnologists, and historiographers tells us how important the country of Armenia is for anyone who studies flora and fauna and the migration of peoples. Armenia is the homeland of each and every one; it is the ancestral home of our individual homelands. All of us—French, English, Germans, and Italians—still dream of seeing in mountainous Asia a cherished land facing the Caucasus—the cradle of our ancestors. Alas, inherited glory is not always accompanied by fortune. Is there a single modern people who has suffered more misfortunes than the Armenians? Divided between three powers, they have found no home in any of them. They always lodge with strangers, and these strangers have more than once proven their oppressors and enemies. When will the so-called "National Accord" overcome its cowardice and servility in the face of crowned executioners? Among the humiliations that weigh upon us, there is no one more grievous and painful. And the unfortunate Armenians, in their naivety, still honor us and call upon us, us traitors, cowards, and hypocrites, while we, with cowardly words, redirect this call from one merciful benefactor to another compassionate benefactor, that is, from death to slavery, from slavery to death. Jean-Jacques-Elisée Reclus – French geographer, historian, and sociologist (1830 – 1905)
