In 1966, Bishop Torkom Manoogian was elected as Primate of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America, and two years later was elevated to the rank of archbishop. As Primate, Archbishop Manoogian became a recognized and respected figure in ecumenical and civic settings, serving in an executive capacity for various ecumenical and interfaith organizations. In April of 1990, Archbishop Manoogian was elected as the 96th Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem by the members of the St. James Brotherhood, and was officially enthroned on October 27, 1990. He served as the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem until his passing in October of 2012.
