INTRODUCTION

The collapse of the World Trade Center (WTC) towers on September 11, 2001, was as sudden as it was dramatic; the complete destruction of such massive buildings shocked nearly everyone. Immediately afterward and even today, there is widespread speculation that the buildings were structurally deficient, that the steel columns melted, or that the fire suppression equipment failed to operate. In order to separate the fact from the fiction, we have attempted to quantify various details of the collapse.

The major events include the following:

  • The airplane impact with damage to the columns.
  • The ensuing fire with loss of steel strength and distortion (Figure 1).
  • The collapse, which generally occurred inward without significant tipping (Figure 2).

Each will be discussed separately, but initially it is useful to review the overall design of the towers.

"WHY THE TOWERS FELL"

NARRATOR: By now you've seen the images and heard the stories.

BILL FORNEY (World Trade Center Survivor): ...because I remember a coworker saying, "Don't. Don't. Don't open the door. Don't go out there. It's fire out there. You're going to, you're going to burn up."

NARRATOR: But what really caused the Twin Towers to collapse? Was their failure inevitable? Or could they have stood longer, giving occupants and emergency crews a better chance for escape?

FIREFIGHTERS: When we hit the fifth floor, that's when everything happened.

It was rattling. It was rolling. It was roaring. The floor was shaking.

I remember getting knocked down the stairwell, landing like a rag doll.

That's when the building started coming down.

EXPLAINER

Why Did the World Trade Center Towers Collapse?

Why did the World Trade Center towers collapse? Weren’t they designed to be earthquake-proof and impact-proof?

The 110-story twin towers of the World Trade Center, which stood at a height of 1,353 feet, were designed to withstand earthquakes as well as impacts like that of a plane. This was evidenced by the fact that the buildings did not fall over on impact, says Brian Markham, a structural engineer with the Ove Arup & Partners engineering firm. The more likely cause of the buildings’ collapse was the resulting fire, exacerbated by the huge quantities of jet fuel present.

What Caused 9/11 — And The Consequences That Linger

The images from that day still haunt us.

The Twin Towers plummeting to the ground, one following the other, smoke snaking through streets, billowing for blocks, fear and confusion spreading like ashes across the country.

We know now what we didn’t know that day: that the terrorist attack had been building for more than a decade. And that it would change our country, irreparably, forever.

Here, Peter Hahn, a professor of history and dean of arts and humanities at Ohio State, discusses the causes — and lingering consequences — of 9/11.

World Trade Center

The World Trade Center has become more to the world than its creators, architects and benefactors could have ever hoped for. It was created in hopes of unity, as it would become the home to the new united nations of lower Manhattan. The original Twin Towers faced a whirlwind of problems in both the construction and the acceptance. It eventually became the most iconic symbol for terrorism in the United States, and ultimately reshaped our entire nation. The rebuild of The World Trade Center 1 will never embody the same significance the Twins did, but American’s hearts will always lie at Ground Zero. The World Trade Center was the first attempt at globalization, and for its affects on our world, we will be forever regretful and forever thankful.
