5 weekend getaways from NYC
https://streeteasy.com/blog/top-5-weekend-getaways-from-nyc/
Here is my selections for future reference:
1. What To Do in Beacon, NY

Once a sleepy little town, Beacon has experienced a renaissance over the last 10 years. It’s now one of the most popular weekend getaways from NYC. The city is an easy 90-minute ride on the Metro-North train, with scenic views of the Hudson River the entire way. Once you arrive, taxis outside the station can take you to your lodging, or you can walk up to Main Street.
The Art Scene in Beacon, NY
The renowned Dia: Beacon museum sits near the Metro-North station, at the top of the hill. Be sure to allow yourself a few hours to explore it fully. If you feel inspired, you can take a class at Hudson Beach Glass and create your own blown-glass object.
Where to Shop, Drink, and Eat
On Main Street, there’s no shortage of art galleries, quaint shops, and bars. Denning’s Point Distillery will quench your thirst with distilled spirits tastings. There are also Beacon’s many eateries that take advantage of local farms and orchards. Another notable place is the Roundhouse, a hotel and restaurant that sits at the edge of Fishkill Creek. Enjoy a cocktail on its patio for a lovely, up-close view of Overlook Falls that engages all the senses.
My notes: it's way too expensive, about over $300/night!!
Where To Go Hiking in Beacon, NY
The Greenway Trail connects to sites like Madam Brett Park, the abandoned ruins around Denning’s Point, and Long Dock Park, where you can rent a kayak and explore the waterways. For the adventurous, a steep climb up Mount Beacon will reward you with spectacular views of the Hudson River and Valley (the trail down the other side is gentler but longer).
Yes, There’s a Local Castle
A little further away is Bannerman Castle. On the way up the river, you probably noticed the ruins of a castle sitting on its own tiny island, like something out of a fairy tale. The castle is available for tours but is only accessible by kayak, canoe, or boat.
Getting there: The Metro-North Hudson line takes you to the Beacon station in 1.5 hours; an express train on weeknights will shave off about 15 minutes.
Where to stay: B&Bs are the most affordable option, though if you feel like splurging, the Roundhouse is a great choice.
2. Hudson, NY Is Great for Antiquing

Hudson has something for everyone, particularly those looking to buy vintage and antique decor. It’s why many New Yorkers make the trip to visit Warren Street to peruse its shops, boutiques, and galleries.
Where To Eat and Drink in Hudson, NY
There are reasons Hudson, NY has been labeled “the Brooklyn” of the Hudson Valley. Here you will find top-notch restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. Love the idea of making candles and drinking wine? Poured Candle Wine Bar offers a unique experience. When it comes to coffee, Hudson does not disappoint. Many locals suggest Hudson Roastery for its organic small-batch coffee, roasted each week.
Where To Kick Back Outside
Overlooking the water in Hudson, NY, you will find Promenade Hill Park, an outdoor green space loaded with historical features. Grab a kayak! Henry Hudson Waterfront Park provides river access.
Getting there: It couldn’t be easier: Amtrak stops right in Hudson after a two-hour ride from Penn Station.
Where to stay: There are plenty of hotels in different prices ranges. One favorite is Rivertown Lodge.
3. Enjoy the Great Outdoors in Harriman State Park, NY

If you really want to get away from it all, head to Harriman State Park for the most outdoorsy weekend getaways from NYC. It is the second-largest state park in New York State, with more than 47,000 acres and over 200 hiking trails. Here you will find waterfalls, seven lakes, and panoramic views of the Hudson River. Besides camping and hiking, there’s also boating, swimming, and fishing. Prefer the ocean? Consider these five NYC beach towns.
Towns Near Harriman State Park
Because there are multiple entrances to the park, there are several towns you can consider staying in. Popular places include Sloatsburg, Suffern, and Tuxedo.
