Europeans started showing up in Aintab with Napoleon invading Egypt in late 18th century and Egypt’s Wazir Ali taking over Aintab as his capital in the 1840s. The Missionaries “invaded” Asia Minor after the liberation of Greece in the 1830s. No doubt there was a mandate for Armenian women to be veiled, which would have been at remote non Christian villages. Otherwise, bigger towns were teeming with Europeans and European fashion since the early 1800s. Today in parts of Iran, same veiling requirements apply to all women, including Armenians.
