 Delaware (2000-present)

That of course will depend on which part of Delaware you live in.

New Castle County is majority suburban style development. Northern New Castle County is almost completely developed, whereas South of the C+D Canal, development is ongoing, so there is still open land. Over 50% of the population lives in this county.

Northern New Castle County contains a small swath of I-95, the only interstate in the state. It also contains the states largest city, Wilmington, which has about 71,000 people.

Kent County is made up of a bunch of small towns interspersed with farmland. It is the least populated area of the state. The biggest town is the capital, Dover, which has about 35,000 people.

Sussex County is also a bunch of small towns and farmland, with the exception of the beaches, which in recent years have experienced rapid growth.

My opinion is that Delaware is an unremarkable state. It’s a bunch of subdivisions and shopping centers, much like many other areas of the country. Traffic isn’t too bad (except weekends in the summer) and it has a much slower and quieter pace than the major metropolitan areas that are nearby.

Before I moved here, Delaware was a pit stop to visit family before driving through to somewhere else. As they say in the real estate business, it’s all about location - and that, in my opinion, is the biggest thing Delaware has going for it.

Delaware is situated in a central area along the I-95 corridor that is within commuting distance to DC/Baltimore, Philly, and NYC.

You can also drive about 3–4 hours west and be in Shenandoah. You can drive 5–6 hours north and be in New England. It truly is a great location for day trips and weekend trips, as it is so close to so much of the Northeast.

The beaches are a nice attraction as well. No sales tax also is a good thing for shopping.

What are some positive sides to living in Delaware?

Here are a few: (posted in 2019)

We are located such that we can easily drive to our beaches, to Baltimore (the Inner Harbor is beautiful), to Philadelphia, to Atlantic City, or to Washington, DC. International airports are also close; e.g. Philly, BWI (Baltimore), and Newark, NJ. I personally am 150 miles from New York City.

It's a small state, ranging from 9 to 39 miles wide and 96 miles long. This means it is easy for businesses to have multiple locations in the state without the usual logistical problems.

We do not have sales tax. That's a biggie, especially for retailers as many people from neighboring states come here to shop. Our gasoline prices are also lower than that of our neighbors.

Delaware has many places to fish, hunt, hike, and bike. The Capital, Dover, is home to the annual Firefly music festival and also to Nascar's race at “The Monster Mile". Our State Fair attracts big-name musical acts in addition to normal fair activities. Also, there is a casino in each county.

Delaware is obsessed with maintaining its roads. The running joke is that “Road Construction Ahead” is the state sign. The upside of this is that the roads are great, and new ones are constantly being built. This provides many jobs which in turn pumps money into the economy and generates tax revenue . The downside is that it takes longer to get anywhere.

We have excellent medical care available. Not just doctors, but hospitals and urgent care facilities and a plethora of walk-in clinics. If for some reason you want care out-of-state, it's not far to world-renowned Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, the Temple Lung Center in Philly, or Sloane-Kettering cancer treatment in NY. There's also a Cancer Center of America in Philly.

Our beaches are nice. One is part of a state park. One is particularly LGBTQ friendly, so members of that community can enjoy the beach without being harassed by others.

I'm sure there is more, but this is what comes to mind right now. Come visit!

To be fair their are advantages.

But the general population is rural & not into sophisticated things. Out of 10 women.. maybe one is not overweight. The international airport is in Philadelphia or Maryland.

No casinos by beach area in Delaware.

Dec, Jan, Feb are dead months. Most businesses closed till spring.

If you got money, No Broadway shows, no expensive cars, no Rodeo drive, no real adult entertainment. No A-List entertainment.

Much of Delaware is a branch of Appallachia.

Good place to hideaway till you decide to vacation in Cabo
