Are you thinking of relocating to Maryland?

Here I'll compile information about living in Maryland:

A:

I am very happy with my condo. We moved to the Forest Glen area, which I like a lot, despite some issues you have with most areas. Our condo had everything we required, but it is older and the overall property needs some maintenance, but the current board is doing a great job tackling it all. The biggest problems have been previous boards not wanting to raise the HOA enough to actually take care of the aging infrastructure as most of the residents are quite a bit older and they balk at any increase. However, the units themselves are a good deal for the area with a lot of amenities for the fee we pay, and I am pretty sure the area is going to be developed more in the next 10+ years, so my investment will be a good one, and in the meantime I have a nice place to live until we retire.

.....So I guess I’m asking more so for opinions on each area rather than the complexes. What one place has to offer opposed to the other. I’m leaning toward Silver Spring just because the proximity but I have heard there is heavier crime in SS. Any input helps! Thanks!

A: Germantown might as well be West Virginia if you’re working in NW. Assuming you’re talking about downtown silver spring (ss is very large): it’s a great place to live. Tons of restaurants, shops, and free activities. The library is beautiful and the county is opening a new aquatic center soon. There is crime…but it’s a city

A: i used to drive from germantown to dc lol it’s not worth the benefits. what you may not have experienced yet is 270 which has become a terrible highway since the county has built over 300 homes. traffic will be stop and go and imo will make any part of silver spring the better option.

A: We moved to Downtown Silver Spring last year. We absolutely love it so far. Benefits of the city, including proximity to the Metro, but also lots of pockets of neighborhoods that make you feel like you're NOT in the city. We're close to so many parks and playgrounds and the Sligo Creek trail. My son goes to Sligo Creek Elementary. Walking distance to shops downtown where we grab dinner or ice cream on warm days. As another commenter mentioned, the library is great and close by too. We humored the idea of moving to Rockville or Germantown to save a bit on the price of a house, but in the end we decided the perks of city living were worth it.

A: Silver Spring all the way. That 21 mile commute from Germantown will be a nightmare in the winter. SS is super close to DC and there’s Metro access. Also there’s tons to do in SS, DC and surrounding areas. Not so much in Germantown. And while there’s crime in SS, Germantown crime has really gotten bad lately.

A:

That commute is going to be hell in Germantown if you work in NW DC. I know there's more factors than just that but I've lived in Maryland for almost four years and the I-270 commute into DC is one of the Top 5 worst commutes in the nation.

I live right next to downtown Silver Spring so I'm biased, but there's a lot to like here..plenty of small businesses, plus a mall downtown..I live a 15-minute walk from the Metro Red Line which gets you to downtown DC in like 30 or 40 minutes. And you're close enough to the Beltway and I-95 that you can connect to Baltimore, Frederick, NoVa, Richmond, or places further away.

Apartment hunting

Hi! Im moving this August from out of state and just wanted ask what apt units can you recommend in Silver Spring area? Budget is <1,800. Thanks!

Even studios are getting crazy expensive so you might want to be flexible with that budget.

A: I have been at The Veridian Apartments for almost 1 year and would NOT recommend it. It is the only place I have been since moving to the area, but staff is unresponsive and packages get lost all the time. Walls are pretty thin too. The cleaners that come in the morning are top notch though; polite and friendly.

A: I live in Lenox Park and I think you can get a lease for a 1 bed around that! It's not as fancy as some other buildings but there are upgraded and non upgraded units, almost every unit has a balcony, in unit laundry, and a pool and gym. I've been really happy with it.

We actually may be looking for someone to take over our lease later this summer and we have a locked in cheaper rate than they advertise now

I always love to read the comments of people, as it's much more revealing the truth. I selected few of them:

1.Todd Bryan
And we have a government that wants to tax us to death and won’t allow us to protect ourselves and want to turn law abiding gun owners into felons. Just thought I’d give you a little of the downside to living here.

2.Susan Cornelius
It’s a horrible state for retirees. We get the taxed to death! I’ve lived here all my life and just retired. We will be heading south in the near future!

3.Jim Mitchell
for you who want to pay less taxes.move to Florida. Just be sure to wear your Hazmat suit.

4.Dottie Stern
Don't forget the close proximity to DC. I live in Florida, but there's a MD flag decal on my car's bumper. Really miss MD, My MD, but not the snow
