I got this message from the PC Magazine newsletter: it sounds interesting - i don't IM. Someone might use it:

Sometimes it seems that instant messaging drives people further apart
rather than bringing them closer. If you use AOL Instant Messenger
(AIM), you can't communicate with MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger,
for example, and vice versa. Trillian solves the problem. From one
